[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. American, Robert's-Style quarter plate daguerreotype camera.
Quarter plate, daguerreotype sliding box camera with mahogany body, lacking a maker's mark, ca 1845-1850. With plate holder and ground glass. The Petzvfal-type lens is unmarked. The bed and lens appear to be original while the rest of the camera’s box appears to have been refinished/reconstructed. The interior also appears to have been repainted. 10 ¼ x 7 x 5 in.
The camera was refinished/restored more than 40 years ago. Enclosed with the lot is a typed letter dated 3 August 1982 from Eaton S. Lothrop, Jr., to Leon Jacobson, and 3 accompanying photographs showing the present daguerreotype camera before restoration.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
